The View from Here

2025

The View from Here examines the intersections of memory and unremembered mourning within queer histories, with particular attention to the enduring impact of the AIDS epidemic in downtown NYC. Drawing on theoretical frameworks related to phantoms and fantasy, the work investigates how loss manifests somatically and how absence continues to shape presence in both individual and collective experience. Inspired by the art of Félix González-Torres and the politics of absence, the piece employs embodied archival practices and layered movement to evoke the intangible traces of grief and resilience. The View from Here positions dance as a site for reimagining memory, and fostering relational witnessing and transformation. This work was created in fulfillment of Gabriella Carmichael’s MFA in Choreography at Smith College.
